1. A Lille bit of red

Kick-off. Half-time. Kick-off, Lille score, go down to 10 men when Béira is sent off for a second yellow. Full-time. Four shots on target, a few corners and far too many niggly fouls. I bet the highlights DVD will be a best seller this Christmas. The win moved LOSC back into second place, after Monaco had briefly taken that spot earlier in the day. However, with the fire-power of Zlatan and Cavani and the billions of the Qatar Investment Authority, it would seem that Paris Saint Germain will be hard to beat if they don’t get distracted by the Champions League.

  2. Silent Night

As the game petered out, with neither team particularly interested in going forward, the Lille fan next to me turned and said “ils ne sont pas digne de porter la chemise” which I believe means that they (the players and not Brian and Dan sitting next to me) weren’t fit to wear the famous red shirt of LOSC. It had been a toothless performance, played out in almost silence. The 40,000 fans had indeed sat silently, bar for the occasional chant which was met with jeers from the other fans. Unfortunately it had no effect on the team who stumbled through the game without ever really testing the Spaniards.

As the final whistle blew, my colleague Patrick offered up a high five. Top spot in the group meant an easier draw in the Knockout stages. But then I pointed out to him that the three other Groups finishing tonight would see AC Milan, Arsenal and Real Madrid as potential opponents. His smile faded slightly until I re-assured him they would get Celtic and be as good as through to the last 8 (joke Scottish football fans).

  4. Is it Nice or Nice?

You could see why Lyon had dominated the game for so long. Whilst both Nice and Nantes were going all out for the win with the game poised at 1-1 the technical ability was lacking. Passes went astray, players ran into other players and there was a general ignorance of the offside law. I saw an opportunity for my beloved Hammers to make a success of their season by asking for a transfer to the French Ligue 1.

  5. Super rich in Super Monaco

There is really not a lot of “touristy” things to do in Monaco. Casino check, Hotel de Paris check but what everyone wants to do is to drive the Grand Prix route. Fortunately help is on hand. Outside the Casino was a special motorbike taxi that for €20 would take you anywhere in the principality. I asked him to take me to the stadium, but via the GP route and off we set, taking the corners on the infamous down hill stretch with ease and racing through the long tunnel under the ICC. At least it is one more thing to tick off your list as a “done that”.

  6. Paris, why is it always Paris

In the past six months I had been to the Stade de France on four occasions. Granted they were to see rugby matches, and granted I had only seen one football match in stadium before (France v Romania in March 2002), but Paris again? But in my quest to get as many caps under my bet as possible it was never going to be a game I was going to miss. I have always publically stated how I hate Paris. A year of working in the city is enough to show the real Paris behind the tourist facade, and it not beautiful, its not chic and its not cultured. It is full of rude people who have no idea of fashion or work ethics. So the temptation to spend more than an hour in the city was not appealing to me so I planned a very quick trip
